In a matter of just a couple of weeks, more than 45,000 pets associated with hardship families have been signed up with the non-profit charity called Pet Food Stamps based in NYC.
According to Pet Food Stamps, “there are over 50 million Americans who currently receive Food Stamps, many with dogs or cats, who simply cannot afford to feed their animals, and these cherished companions are dropped off at animal shelters where they will most likely be put to sleep.”Many pet owners are dealing with foreclosures, evictions, and unemployment. Such a sad commentary, indeed.
This particular program fills the gap of the United States Food Stamps Program which does not cover pet food. Here’s how it works: if considered, for a six month time span families can receive discounted pet food from a retailer. All orders will come from www.PetFlow.com. This is NOT a government based operation, but runs just like the regular food stamps program. Pet Food Stamps is strictly supported by private donations. What are your thoughts about this program? Do you think it will make a dent in keeping more of our beloved pets off the streets and out of animal shelters?
