These days the different types of food available for your pets is astounding. Raw, wet, vegan, organic, kibble you name it. Many times pet owners want to know if wet food is more beneficial then kibble. Well, let me say that it really all just depends on your pup, your wallet and what your pets needs are. Each set of circumstances is unique.

Below you will find a few key points on pros then cons of wet dog food:

The Pros:

– Wet dog food is excellent source of hydration for your pet. Some dogs drink less water than others. Water is a must in your pet’s diet. Failure to consume enough water will lead to dehydration. That in turn will lead to other serious illnesses as well your pet’s organs failing quickly. If your dog isn’t big on lapping up the H2O then supplementing with wet food may be a great option.

– Wet dog food is great if your pet has lost any teeth or has loose teeth. If your pet is missing teeth or has loose or sensitive teeth then noshing down on soft food is ideal for them. Many pets suffering with dental issues are turned off from kibble because, well it’s hard to chew. Same applies to dogs with smaller mouths or jaw problems.

– Wet dog food is also beneficial to older dogs with poor sense of smell. The scent found in kibble is not as strong and quite less appealing versus wet food. If your dog is older, wet food will most likely appeal to their little noses and keep them eating through their golden years. Just like elderly humans, senior pets can lose interest in food or have less of an appetite as they age.

The Cons:

– Wet food can be less cost effective versus kibble. The shelf life is longer for kibble and it comes in larger containers, so generally speaking, kibble tends to pack a better price.

– Wet dog food can be very messy. This in and of itself will entail more clean up.  The wet food will get on your fuzzy pups face, eating area and bowls.

– Wet food may  require more dental care versus the kibble. Most kibble acts like a toothbrush, helping scrub away the tartar. Wet food sort of sticks to the tooth and slide off. Simply put, wet food lacks the scrubbing action.  So as you can see there are positives as well as negatives to feeding your dog wet dog food.  When it comes down to it, you just need to go with what works best for you and your pup! Most importantly, choose a high quality dog food whether it be kibble or wet food.
